A MAN has died and a woman is fighting for her life after two cars collided during a police chase through Stoke-on-Trent this morning.
The horror crash took place on the A50 near Longton, Staffordshire, at around 6.15am.
Police said the man being chased by police smashed his car into another vehicle on the eastbound carriageway.
The man died, while a woman who was travelling with him has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
People travelling in the other vehicle also needed hospital treatment for minor injuries.
Following the crash, police closed the road in both directions this morning.
Staffordshire Police said the car was being pursued for failing to stop.
A spokesman said: We have had to close both sides of the A50 this morning (15 April) after a man has passed away following a road traffic collision.
“The man’s vehicle was involved in a collision with another vehicle on the eastbound carriageway at around 6.15am this morning between the Baths Road and Trentham Road junctions.

“A woman was also travelling with the man who passed away; she is currently in hospital in a critical condition.
“Fortunately the occupants of the second vehicle only received minor injuries and have been taken to hospital as a precaution.
“The Collision Investigation Unit are at the scene and we would ask for any member of the public with information about the incident to call 101 quoting incident number 177 of 15 April. Our teams will work as swiftly as possible to keep disruption to a minimum.
“The vehicle involved in the collision was being pursued by police officers for failing to stop prior to the incident occurring.
“Due to our involvement before the collision, we have voluntarily referred ourselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”
